UH-18SP Subaru Cross Over Exhaust Modifications
We read several place and had several people tell us that our ea-82 would run a lot better if we had a cross over, or H pipe in the exhaust. So over the winter I looked into it a bit on the internet and found out the engine would run smoother and we would gain around 10hp with a cross over. To make the cross over we needed 2 tee's, to make them we started out with a short piece of straight pipe and cut a hole in the middle of it to the I.D. of a 2" connector.
Next we cut out a half circle out of the bottom of a 2" to 1-7/8" connector to the O.D. of the 2" pipe, this is where a tubing notcher would have came in nice, I don't know how many times I almost bought the tubing notcher from Harbor Freight.....
We forgot to take picture after this but we just welded the connector onto the pipe and made a tee, then we just clampped on the other to connectors that you see in the picture. The guy at auto zone sure was looking at me weird when I went in to buy all the connectors, then when I told him using them to build a cross over exhaust system for a subaru engine on a hovercraft he looked at me even weirder LOL.
In this picture you can see how the tee's came out. We then used 1-7/8" stainless flex pipe to connect the tee's to the manifolds and to connect the tee's together. And we have a 1-7/8" elbow comming off of each tee going to the cherry bomb mufflers. Afterwards we wraped the piece of flex pipe going between the tee's with heat tape to keep it from heating up the oil pan and lift belt. Now you can put your hand on it after its been running and its just warm to the touch.
You can also see that we painted the new subaru cross over exhaust system with some black high temp header paint, its supposed to be good up to around 1600 or 1800 degrees F. We also added some chrome tips to the cherry bomb mufflers to make it look a little nicer and to keep the hot exhaust gasses further from the foam thrust duct and also the thrust duct supports..
